Kara Walker: A black hole is all a star aspires to be
Best known for her large-scale paper-cut silhouettes that span entire rooms, American artist Kara Walker offers a more intimate glimpse into her work in this exhibition at Kunstmuseum Basel (June 5-September 26). Here are some 600 works on paper from his personal archives, presented to the public for the first time; together they show how much drawing – and the influence of masters of the medium such as Goya and Hogarth – was in Walker’s construction of his extensive paintings, which generally echo the history of slavery and racism in the United States.
