Tiffany Askew will take over as NBHA Executive Director on June 1.
The New Bern Housing Authority has announced that Tiffany Askew will take up her role as Executive Director effective June 1. Tharesa Lee has been the interim director of the Housing Authority since Martin Blaney stepped down in February 2020.
Askew has worked in public housing for over 20 years, most recently as the Rental Housing Manager at Spartanburg Housing in Spartanburg, SC She began her career at Northwest Georgia Housing Authority in Rome, Georgia and Fulton County Housing Authority in Atlanta. , Ga.
Askew has a BA in Social Work from Fort Valley State University, an MA in Leadership from Shorter University, and numerous certifications regarding affordable housing and property management certifications.
The ASNB operates affordable apartments in the New Bern area for families and seniors. Askew said she sees her role as a caretaker for both the buildings and the people who live in them.
“My goal is to connect with residents and families to make sure they have the housing and resources they need to be productive in the community,” she commented.
Askew’s mission to New Bern will include resolving flood damage from Hurricane Florence, particularly at Trent Court, which will involve the demolition of units and the relocation of families. Previously, she led a relocation team to support the safe move of over 300 families to Spartanburg.
The Housing Authority is also overseeing construction of the $ 13 million, 84-unit affordable apartment complex on Carolina Avenue, located southwest of downtown New Bern. The first buildings should be ready in late summer or early fall.
